Every HW assignment must be turned in two ways:  

1. Full Resolution Photoshop file (.PSD),  with all layers
2. B&W Printout of image to hand in 

3. File Managnement

    Save files in 3 locations

Accessing the MMM server:

      Turning in assignments on the Server ("dropbox")

5. Image Properties: Color and Size

Color- The amount of Colors you can display in an image is "Color Depth". There are various images modes that allow for various amounts or colors, or colors that correspond to a different "system" 

  

Main types of images by color

          Bitmap  - Two colors Each pixel is basically either on or off, black or white

         Grayscale - 256 shades of gray

         RGB - 16.7 million colors, the native color mode to the screen, 

         CMYK - Color mode that corresponds with printer colors, use for images made for print

Color Profiles - Specific callibrations of color targeted to various displays and printers

      

Image Size= Width (in Pixels) by height (in Pixels)<-- you only have to worry about pixels when designing for the web or for computer output!!!

Later on, when beginning to think about designing for print, we'll have to think about resolution

and size of the image in Inches

RESOLUTION = how many pixels per inch

Equation:  Width (in inches) x Resolution (Pixels per inch PPI) = How many pixels wide the image is

                  Length (in inches x Resolution (Pixels per inch PPI) =How many pixels long the image is

                           If you have a camera that shoots 3000 by 4000 pixel images, thats

                                          3000 x 4000 = 12 million pixel depth, or a 12 Megapixel camera.        

Tools: 

  Move Tool ("V")  --  Drag objects on the canvas around. Your primary tool!  Paintbrush Tool ("B") -- Your customizable drawing tool. 

 Eraser Tool ("E") It erases your image! the tip can be customized in the same way as the paintbrush.

  Color Picker -- Choose which color you draw with, or which color you uncover when you erase. Click the arrows to switch!

  Zoom Tool ("Z")  --  zoom in to get a closer look at details. Hold Option key while clicking to zoom out. Drag a window on your composition to define boundaries of your zoomed view.

Hand Tool ("H") -- move your canvas around. This tool is great when you are zoomed in.

Navigator -- A handy map of your whole image. Precisely control your zoom level. The red square shows how much of your image and what region you are currently viewing. Alot of editing will be weeding through tiny details. Navigator will come in handy.

6. In-Class Excercise:   Paintbrush Drawing from 

1.Download a photographic image from the web. Choose something colorful and striking.

You can drag the image directly from your web browser into the PS icon on the dock, or, after downloading, go to FILE-->OPEN (COMMAND-O).

 2. Inspect the image size IMAGE-->IMAGE SIZE. Copy down the pixel dimensions

3. Start a blank file of the same size FILE-->NEW. Make it the same pixel dimensions.

4.Now, experiment with brush size, shape, hardness, opacity, textre, etc, to copy your original image, using only the Paintbrush, eraser, to paint a copy of your original image on the now, blank canvas.

Complete the tutorial from the PSD's and PDF available in the Class folder. Turn in finished PSD file (with layers) to the dropbox by the beginning of class next week.
